چکیده

Elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) modelling plays an important role in engineering design and analysis since a number of important mechanical components operate under EHL conditions. In this paper methods are presented for solving both line and point contact cases using multiphysics software. The advantages, and the overheads, of using such an approach over developing highly specialised, bespoke software are highlighted. In order to calculate the deformation of the contacts three different methods are developed and their relative performance is assessed. The advantage of using a nested solution strategy has also been examined. The flexibility of the multiphysics software approach is highlighted in results involving a complex transient case modelling an involute gear.

An Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian Formulation for Modelling Cavitation in the Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication of Line Contacts

In this article an arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) formulation for modelling cavitation in elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) is derived and applied to line contact geometry. The method is developed in order to locate the position of cavitation onset along the length of the contacting region which gives the transition from liquid to vapour in the fluid. The ALE is implemented by introduci...

Investigation of Couple Stress Fluid and Surface Roughness Effects in the Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Problems using Wavelet-Based Decoupled Method

Abstract: The standard decoupled method with Newton-generalized minimum residual procedure performs poorly or may break down when used to solve certain elastohydrodynamic lubrication problems. The authors Zargari et al., 2007 presented decoupled and coupled methods in which the limitations of the decoupled method for some set of physical parameters and slight variation in these values (physical...

Adaptive high-order Discontinuous Galerkin solution of elastohydrodynamic lubrication point contact problems

This paper describes an adaptive implementation of a high order Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for the solution of elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) point contact problems. These problems arise when modelling the thin lubricating film between contacts which are under sufficiently high pressure that the elastic deformation of the contacting elements cannot be neglected. The governing equa...

High Order Discontinuous Galerkin Method for Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Line Contact Problems

In this paper a high order Discontinuous Galerkin method is used to solve steady-state isothermal line contact elastohydrodynamic lubrication problems. This method is found to be stable across a wide range of loads and is shown to permit accurate solutions using just a small number of degrees of freedom provided suitable grids are used. A comparison is made between results obtained using this p...
